Brief Description

The development of a fertilized egg into a fully grown adult is one of most fascinating processes in nature. My lab uses the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model organism to study how genes control development.

Many of the important genes that control development have counterparts in humans and have been implicated in diseases like cancer.

By examining the molecular nature of these important genes, we can begin to understand how they function at the mechanistic level during development. One gene that we study is zelda, which plays a crucial role in early development in Drosophila; we ask how it functions and how it is regulated. Several different research projects will be available for study.

Research Method

Students will examine data collected from genetic experiments previously performed in the Rushlow lab.

Students will investigate the role of the zelda gene in activating the early genome in the model organism Drosophila (fruit fly).

Requirements

Students will write a report that introduces the biological question and its significance, explains the experimental methodology, and discusses and interprets the results of the experiments.

Referring Materials

(papers and textbooks)

There is no textbook for this class. Lecture notes and primary research articles will be provided in-class.
